Jonni Cheatwood’s work is an exploration of layers. Starting from gathered fabric scraps sewn together, the patchwork canvases are moved from floor to wall while the artist works both intuitively and strategically with marks of his own devices overlapped with happy accidents left by shoe prints and spilled materials. Together the marks build up to an autobiographical reflection of the time and place they were created.
Cheatwood was born in 1986 in Thousand Oaks, CA, USA to Brazilian immigrant parents. He attended Arizona State University. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
In 2012, Cheatwood was a semi-finalist in The Next Artspace Artist competition, which was put on in collaboration with Artspace and Tumblr. Cheatwood created the artwork for Kitty Cash’s Love the Free, Volume 2 mixtape and his work can be seen in Usher’s music video, She Came to Give It to You.
Cheatwood has been exhibited at the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, New York, NY, USA, and at various galleries internationally.
