Biography

Reko Rennie is an interdisciplinary artist who explores his Aboriginal identity through contemporary media, provoking discussions surrounding Indigenous culture and identity in contemporary urban environments. Largely autobiographical, his commanding works combine the iconography of his Kamilaroi heritage with stylistic elements of graffiti. Merging traditional diamond-shaped designs, hand-drawn symbols and repetitive patterning to subvert romantic ideologies of Aboriginal identity.

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1974, Rennie grew up in the working-class, inner-city suburb of Footscray. Although never formally trained, he was surrounded by the well-known  artwork of his father, the Aboriginal artist Biggibilla Gummaroi.

In 2008, Rennie won the prestigious Victorian Indigenous Art Award. He has participated in a number of notable solo and group exhibitions both internationally and in Australia, including Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, Australia; Museum of Contemporary Art, Lyon, France; and Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. In 2017, he was featured in a group exhibition at the 57th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy.  Rennie’s work is held in many significant private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Koorie Heritage Trust, ArtBank, City of Yarra and the New Contemporary Art Museum in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.
